The puma (also known as the cougar, panther or mountain lion) is a slender cat with a lion-like face. Native to North and South America, these animals vary greatly in size and color. The puma can weigh up to 175 pounds and achieve a length of up to 7 feet including its 30” tail. These beautiful animals are normally found on the ground but are also very adept climbers.
Pumas are solitary creatures, rarely seen by humans. They will normally run rather than attack any human crossing their path. Their preferred prey is the deer. By habit, these animals are nocturnal and prefer crevices in rock ledges, overhangs, and small rocky areas. On average, male pumas will range over an area of about 100 miles. The puma is also the largest member of the cat family that purrs.
